Derek Klena Career, Turning Point as an actor :

Klena was born in the California town of San Dimas. He grew up in West Covina, California, west of Los Angeles, with his two younger brothers, and attended South Hills High School. Dillon, his brother, is also an actor.

He studied theatre at the University of California, Los Angeles before changing his major to psychology. Klena played baseball his freshman year before becoming serious about acting and auditioning. He performed in regional Southern California theatre from 2009 to 2011.

He appeared in the ninth season of American Idol. After show producer Marc Shaiman approached Klena about a version he made of its song “Goodbye” at a Los Angeles cabaret event, Klena was asked to audition as a standby for Aaron Tveit in the Broadway musical Catch Me If You Can. He was not cast, but was later asked to audition for Carrie’s workshop. In his junior year, he took a leave of absence from UCLA to participate in the 2012 Off-Broadway production of Carrie.

In the theatrical adaptation of Dogfight, he played Eddie Birdlace. He appeared on Broadway as Fiyero in the 10th-anniversary production of Wicked in 2013. Following that, he starred as Michael Johnson in the original Broadway production of The Bridges of Madison County.

In 2014, he was cast in the Signature Theatre in Virginia’s pre-Broadway musical adaptation of the 1982 film Diner. The musical, adapted by original screenwriter Barry Levinson and featuring music by Sheryl Crow, was initially scheduled to premiere on Broadway but did not make the cut.

He was cast as Dmitry in the first production of Anastasia, a stage musical adaptation of the animated film of the same name, in 2016. It premiered in Hartford, Connecticut in March 2016 and had its Broadway debut in April 2017. He left the production after a year to participate in the original Cambridge, Massachusetts production of Jagged Little Pill, a musical based on Alanis Morissette’s songs. The Broadway play will begin performances in December 2019.
