An American actor, director, writer, and producer by the name of Eriq La Salle was born Erik Ki La Salle on July 23, 1962. La Salle is best known for his roles in the 1988 film Coming to America and the NBC medical drama ER (1994–2002; 2008–2009), particularly his portrayal of Dr. Peter Benton.
These roles helped him win three NAACP Image Awards and were nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

Early Life, Personal Details, Education
La Salle was one of four children, and his mother Ada Haynes brought him up in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended Weaver High School and the Hartford-based Artists Collective, Inc.
He studied drama at the Juilliard School for two years (1980–1984) as a member of Group 13, after which he transferred to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he graduated from the Graduate Acting Program in 1984 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
La Salle was chosen to play Henry V in Joseph Papp’s Shakespeare in the Park production around the time of his NYU graduation.
Soon after, he continued to work as an actor on Broadway, off-Broadway, and in a number of daytime TV dramas, such as One Life to Live, where he portrayed the reporter Mike Rivers. La Salle co-starred with Eddie Murphy in the 1988 film Coming to America as the gruff Darryl Jenks.

La Salle played Dr. Peter Benton in the NBC debut of the medical drama ER in 1994. Up to the seventh season, he was in the position. During the show’s 15th and final season, he reappeared for three episodes, making an uncredited cameo as himself at the introduction of “Heal Thyself” to inform the viewers of Michael Crichton’s passing. He came back to helm one episode in season 15.
He appeared as the mechanic Slick Will in Biker Boyz on January 31, 2003. In the indie film Johnny Was, he costarred with Vinnie Jones, Samantha Mumba, Lennox Lewis, and Roger Daltrey as a Jamaican thug. La Salle sponsored the film’s debut at the 2006 American Black Film Festival in Miami while it was being filmed for four weeks in Belfast.
Relative Stranger, a Hallmark Channel original film starring La Salle, debuted on March 14, 2009. Cicely Tyson and Michael Beach and Michele (as Dr. Cleo Finch) from La Salle’s time on ER also appeared in the film (Al Boulet).
In the series finale of 24 in 2010 and a special appearance on an episode of Covert Affairs that August, La Salle portrayed the Secretary General of the UN. In 2011, he appeared in two recurring parts, the first in HBO’s How to Make it in America as a Caribbean community leader who led a protest against the product Rasta Monsta, and the second in CBS’ A Gifted Man as the neuropsychiatrist E-Mo.
With his acting debut in the HBO made-for-TV film Rebound: The Legend of Earl “The Goat” Manigault, starring Don Cheadle, James Earl Jones, and Forest Whitaker, La Salle launched his directing career in 1996. La Salle soon after directed the Showtime’s Soul Food: The Series pilot.
Eriq was the producer of the 2002 motion picture The Salton Sea. He produced, directed, and performed in the film Crazy as Hell that same year. He wrote, directed, and performed in “Memphis,” a Twilight Zone episode, in 2003. The following year, he directed many episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: NY, Ringer, the 2012 Hallmark Channel film Playing Father, and the NBC spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime. Laws of Depravity, La Salle’s first book, was released in 2012.
After directing one episode of the second season of Under the Dome, La Salle made a comeback to television in 2015 with a part in that season. In the third season, he also directed one of the episodes. He appeared in and directed CSI: Cyber episodes. He appeared in other television shows including Madam Secretary and The Night Shift.
In 2016, La Salle helmed the episodes “Wingman” for the Fox television programme Lucifer and “Black and Blue” for the TNT television programme Murder in the First. The superhero movie Logan from 2017, he played Will Munson. In addition, La Salle produced and directed a number of Chicago P.D. episodes throughout the course of its many seasons.
