Berry was born on August 14, 1966, in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Her parents are Jerome Jesse Berry, an African-American who worked as an attendant in the psychiatric ward, and her mother Judith Ann, a white English immigrant from Liverpool who was a psychiatric nurse at the same hospital. She has an older sister named Heidi Berry-Henderson.

She attended Bedford High School in Ohio, where she was a cheerleader, honor student, editor of the school newspaper and prom queen. Then she studied at Cuyahoga Community College. Berry started her career as a model. She entered several beauty contests. In 1985, she won Miss Teen All-American. She was the first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant and she came sixth in the Miss World 1986.

In 1989, she started her acting career with the television series Living Dolls, in which she played the role of Emily Franklin.
