As an Actor
Ellis moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career in 2004. His first break as an actor was in the television series Invasion in 2005. After which, he started appearing in several series like Related, The Bold and the Beautiful, Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, How I Met Your Mother, Hart of Dixie, iCarly, Crash & Bernstein, The Game, NCIS: Los Angeles, Masters of Sex, Grace and Frankie, and Mrs. America. From 2016 to 2021, he played the role of Martin “Lawrence” Walker in the HBO comedy series Insecure. His character has a long-term relationship with the main character Issa Dee. For his performance, Ellis received the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award at the 49th NAACP Image Awards.
Ellis has also appeared in short films like Triple Standard, Hatched: A Tale of Great Egg-spectations, Election Eve, Mass Shooting News Team, The Black Bachelor, Twelve Steps, and Thirsty.
His other movies include Let’s Do This!, Movie 43, Dear Secret Santa, My Favorite Five, November Rule, Breaking Through, Like Cotton Twines, Shortwave, In A Relationship, Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Top Gun: Maverick. His upcoming movie is Somebody I Used to Know, which is currently being filmed. Ellis was the producer of the feature film Black Box in 2020.

Ellis was born on December 27, 1981, in Sumter, South Carolina, United States. His father Wendell Ellis Sr. worked in the Air Force, and his mother Paula Bryant-Ellis worked as a finance executive. He has attended 12 schools in 13 years. After school, he graduated from Concordia University in Oregon. He played basketball in college. After college, he started his career by working as a public relations intern for the Portland Trail Blazers. After his internship, he switched his career as a model and worked with Portland-based sportswear brands like Adidas, Nike, and Columbia Sportswear.
In 2015, Ellis married Nina Senicar, actress and model. The couple has a daughter together, Nora Grace, born in November 2019. Ellis’s height is 6 feet 2 inches, weight is 84kgs, hair color is black, and eye color is dark brown. His net worth is estimated to be $3 million.
