Early Life and Personal Details

Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City, United States. Her parents are Daniel Benjamin Bassett and Betty Jane Bassett. She has a younger sister named D’nette Bassett. She grew up with her aunt Golden in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

When she was 4 years old, she moved to Florida with her mother. She attends Jordan Park Elementary School and Disston Middle School. Then she moved to Azalea Middle School for eighth and ninth grade. She graduated from Boca Ciega High School, where she was a cheerleader, and was also part of the debate team and drama club.

In 1980, she graduated from Yale University with a B.A. degree in African-American studies. After graduating from college, she worked as a receptionist for a beauty salon, then moved to New York to work in theatre.

In 1997, she married actor Courtney B. Vance. The couple has two children – son Slater Josiah Vance and daughter Bronwyn Golden Vance.
