Miles Teller (born February 20, 1987) is an American actor best known for his appearances in Whiplash as jazz drummer Andrew Neiman and Top Gun: Maverick as pilot Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw.

Teller made his feature film debut in 2010 and rose to prominence for his roles in the 2013 coming-of-age picture The Spectacular Now and the Divergent film trilogy (2014-2016), all of which he co-starred with Shailene Woodley. His breakout performance in the 2014 Academy Award-winning drama Whiplash gave him widespread attention. Following Whiplash, he established himself as a leading man, appearing in a number of romantic comedies, as well as the superhero feature Fantastic Four (2015) and the 2016 biographical films War Dogs and Bleed for This.

Teller appeared in the action film Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski, with whom Teller had worked on the film Only the Brave (2017). They collaborated once again for the Netflix feature Spiderhead (2022). He has been on television in the Amazon crime thriller Too Old to Die Young (2019) and the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer (2022) based on The Godfather.

Early Life:

Teller was born in Pennsylvania to real estate salesperson Merry and nuclear power plant engineer Michael. Erin and Dana are his two elder sisters. His paternal grandpa was of Russian Jewish heritage, and he had English and Irish ancestors.

Teller grew up in Pennsylvania and Delaware until his family relocated to Citrus County, Florida, when he was twelve years old. He was interested in acting as a child, was president of his high school’s theatrical club, and also played alto saxophone, drums, piano, and guitar. He also played competitive baseball and aspired to be a professional. In Lecanto, Florida, he graduated from Lecanto High School.

Following that, he enrolled at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, where he studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and screen acting at Stonestreet Studios. In 2009, he received a BFA in theatre.

Teller was a passenger in a vehicle that flipped eight times while traveling at 80 mph (130 km/h). The collision left him with several scars on his face.

Career:

Between 2004 and 2010, Teller participated in a number of short films. Teller had his significant cinematic debut in Rabbit Hole (2010) when Nicole Kidman chose him for the part. In high school, he appeared in the stage musical Footloose and subsequently starred in the 2011 remake film of the same name. He co-starred in the 2013 films 21 & Over and The Spectacular Now with Shailene Woodley.

Teller received nominations for the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actor, the Satellite Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture, and the BAFTA Rising Star Award for his performance as a drummer attempting to impress his abusive jazz teacher (J. K. Simmons) in Damien Chazelle’s second film Whiplash (2014).

Teller gained more acclaim for his performance as Peter Hayes in Divergent (2014) and its sequels, Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016).

He also portrayed Mister Fantastic in the Fantastic Four reboot (2015) and weapons dealer David Packouz in War Dogs (2016). He prepared for 5 months to play biographical fighter Vinny Paz in the film Bleed for This (2016).

Teller appeared in two biographical films in 2017, Only the Brave and Thank You for Your Service. Teller will feature in The Fence, a political satire, which will be released in November 2020. Filming on The Offer, a Paramount+ miniseries on the making of The Godfather in which Teller portrays producer Albert S. Ruddy was momentarily delayed in September 2021 owing to COVID issues. From April to June 2022, the miniseries aired. He starred in Taylor Swift’s music video “I Bet You Think About Me,” directed by Blake Lively, in November 2021.

Teller appeared in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. He was originally reluctant to accept the job because he was concerned about the possible popularity and attention he would get from playing opposite Tom Cruise in a blockbuster picture. Cruise himself pushed him to take the part, convincing him that he was ideal for it.

Miles Teller revealed to the studio in May 2022 that he has been proposing a follow-up picture focusing on his character. The actor dubbed his pitch Top Gun: Rooster. By July of the same year, he revealed that he and Tom Cruise were in continuous talks for a sequel. In terms of popularity and support, Teller said that the experience has been “amazing” and that “I’ve never really experienced anything like this in my life.” Teller made his hosting debut on the first episode of Saturday Night Live’s 48th season.
