Winfrey started her career as a news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. She was the youngest and the first black female news anchor. In 1984, she moved to Chicago to host a morning talk show at WLS-TV. In 1986, she got her big break with her own show The Oprah Winfrey Show on September 8.

Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States. At the age of 17, she won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. Winfrey attended Lincoln High School in Milwaukee, then transferred to Nicolet High School. She studied Communication at Tennessee State University, a historically State University. She started working at a local grocery store as a teenager and then worked at WVOL, a local black radio station during high school and in her first two years of college.
