SmokePurpp is an American rapper and record producer from Florida. He made his debut in the lo-fi rap scene in 2015 through the online audio distribution site SoundCloud. He began as a producer in high school then began rapping after being unsuccessful in that area of business. As a self-avowed marijuana and Xanax addict, his songs often include allusions to drug usage.

His lyrics are about life in rough neighborhoods, sexual exploits with young ladies, the yearning for money and luxury, and the significance of enjoying life to the fullest. He is one of three rappers to emerge from Florida in the previous three years to earn prominence and a devoted fan base, the other two being his childhood and closest buddy ‘Lil Peep’ and XXXTentacion. Fans of lo-fi rap and trap music have praised his collaboration with Canadian producer and rapper Murda Beatz.

 Early Life

On May 15, 1997, he was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, and was given the name Omar Jeffery Pineiro. His mother is Hispanic, while his father is of mixed ancestry. He relocated to Miami (Dade County), Florida, with his family when he was three years old.

In one of his interviews, he stated that the neighbourhood where he grew up was not a nice one, with a lot of criminal activity and violence. In childhood and high school, he characterised himself as a peaceful guy surrounded by many sorts and groupings of individuals.

Smoke started taking drugs when he was young. He began smoking marijuana when he was eight years old and began using Xanax when he was sixteen. He even sold Xanax for a while. In Miami, he attended North Gardens High School. He began seriously pursuing music in high school and eventually became a music producer. After experiencing success in music, he dropped out in his senior year of high school.

 Career

He began making music in high school. He used to produce music using the DWA FL Studio software. Smoke disliked the attention that came with being a rapper and thus preferred to work behind the scenes as a producer. He has admitted in numerous interviews that he failed to find success as a producer because his beats were poor and no one wanted to rap over them. After failing to find success as a producer, he began rapping over his own instrumentals.

In July 2015, he submitted his debut song on the internet audio sharing network ‘SoundCloud,’ but erased it because he believed it lacked quality. Soon after, he released his second single, ‘Live off a lick,’ on SoundCloud, featuring rapper XXXTentacion. ‘Sam$ung Jumpin’ was his first successful SoundCloud track. His second SoundCloud smash was the song ‘Ski Mask,’ which went viral and had millions of views.

In the media and music business, he is known as a ‘SoundCloud rapper.’ His musical style has been labelled as ‘Lo-fi rap’ and/or ‘trap.’ Lyrical allusions to drug addiction, expensive automobiles, gang violence, and sexual activities appear often in his songs.

He secured a contract with music industry mogul Todd Moscowitz’s new record company ‘Alamo Records’ under the Universal Music Group in March 2017. Smoke also got a $50,000 diamond necklace as an extra present. He also secured a contract with Interscope Records in the same month. On May 12, 2017, he released an extended play (EP) album called ‘Up Now Fuck Next’ on the Alamo Records label in digital download format.

He often collaborates with fellow Florida rap artist Lil Pump, whom he has known since boyhood. He also works with Canadian producer and rapper Murda Beatz. In May 2017, he released his track ‘Audi,’ which became his greatest success to date, with 25 million SoundCloud plays and 33 million Spotify streaming. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the song as Gold (RIAA). The song appeared on his mixtape album ‘Deadstar,’ which was published in September 2017. Following the release of his mixtape ‘Deadstar,’ he signed with Cactus Jack Records.

On September 28, 2017, he released his mixtape ‘Deadstar,’ which includes collaborations with artists including as Chief Keef, Juicy J, Travis Scott, Yo Gotti, D.R.A.M., and Lil Pump. TM88, Ronny J, and Harry Fraud are among the renowned producers on this mixtape. He received a chain as a reward for signing with Travis Scott’s label Cactus Jack Records after the release of this mixtape.

Deadstar, a mixtape, debuted at number 42 on the Billboard 200 albums list. Deadstar debuted at number 24 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums list and number 16 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart. It peaked at number 77 on the Billboard Canada Albums list. Smokepurpp’s first big album is the mixtape ‘Deadstar,’ which has eighteen songs. It was scheduled to be published on September 22, 2017, but it was delayed until September 28, 2017.

On November 8, 2017, he stated on the MTV programme ‘TRL’ that he is working on a new mixtape titled ‘Bless Yo Trap’ alongside Canadian producer and rapper Murda Beatz. He subsequently released two mixtape singles, ‘123’ and ‘Do Not Disturb.’ ‘Do Not Disturb’ featured rapper Lil Yachty and Offset from the American hip hop band the Migos.

On April 13, 2018, the mixtape ‘Bless Yo Trap’ was released and debuted at number 40 on the Billboard 200 albums list. The mixtape debuted at number 22 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums list and the mixtape peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums list. The mixtape debuted at number 30 on the Billboard Top Canadian Albums list.

The mixtape’s track ‘123’ peaked at number 19 on the Billboard ‘US bubbling hot under 100’ list. Smokepurpp has stated that a sequel to his mixtape ‘Deadstar’ is in the works. The sequel is provisionally dubbed ‘Deadstar 2’ and has no set release date.

There have been leaks of songs and lyrics allegedly from various tracks on the mixtape, however Smokepurpp has yet to confirm that these leaks are genuine. On December 25, 2017, a song named ‘Distance’ was leaked on SoundCloud, claiming to be from the ‘Deadstar 2’ mixtape.

In March 2018, he unveiled a new project in an interview with Canadian music critic ‘Nardwuar.’ The latest project is a mixtape called ‘Sound of Space,’ and the release date has yet to be determined.
