Carolyn Dawn Johnson (born April 30, 1971) is a Canadian country music singer-songwriter. Johnson co-wrote Chely Wright’s 1999 single “Single White Female,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in September 1999. Arista Nashville signed Johnson in 2000.

Johnson’s debut album, Room with a View, was released in 2001. The album’s first single, “Georgia,” peaked at No. 4 on the RPM Canadian Country Singles Chart for the week ending November 6, 2000. “Complicated” reached the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in the United States.

Her next single, “I Don’t Want You to Go,” was also a Top Ten hit in the United States. Johnson returned after a three-year hiatus with the single “Let Me Introduce Myself.” It was the lead single from her fourth album, Love Rules, which was released in 2010.

Carolyn Dawn Johnson was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta to John Johnson, a farmer and seed-cleaning business owner, and Loretta Johnson, a home supervisor. Johnson grew up on a farm in Deadwood, Alberta, with two brothers, late older brother Derwin, who died on Christmas Eve in 1998 from an undisclosed illness, and brother Greg.

Johnson was obsessed with music from a young age and once asked her mother how anyone could live without it. She began singing in church and playing the piano at the age of five, learning from her pastor’s wife, Evangeline Thiessen. Her parents played country music records by Jim Reeves and Don Williams at home, and as she grew older, her musical tastes expanded to include artists such as ABBA, Charley Pride, Fleetwood Mac, and Marty Stuart, among others.

Johnson attended RF Staples High School in Westlock, Alberta, after his family relocated there. She studied the clarinet, flute, and saxophone in high school. She kept up with her piano lessons in part because Thiessan sent her books and encouraging letters. Her high school teachers were not as encouraging, leading her to abandon music for a time and pursue science, a period in her life she refers to as “a stain in her heart.”

Johnson went to Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia to study biology after graduating from high school, believing she couldn’t make a living as a musician. A year later, she moved to Edmonton, Alberta to study education. During her college years, she frequently sat-in with local bands at night, and their encouragement encouraged her to consider a career in the music industry.

She taught herself to play the guitar at the age of 20 and, realising that music was her true calling, moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where she attended Columbia Academy and learned the technical aspects of the music industry.

In her spare time, Johnson focused on songwriting and ordered a video featuring Nashville songwriters to learn more about songwriting; through this video, she joined the Nashville Songwriters Association International. Johnson travelled to Nashville in 1994 after calling her mother and saying, “I’m going all out. I’m thinking in terms of the big picture.”
