Early Life
Chris Cummings emerged in the late 1990s as a performer solidly in the mould of current country’s New Traditionalist movement, thanks to his deep baritone vocal style. He made his public singing debut at the age of five in Norton, New Brunswick, and was a local star throughout his youth.
At the age of 14, Cummings self-released a cassette that made its way to the Nashville offices of Warner/Reprise president Jim Ed Norman, who saw enormous potential in the young singer; the same tape also caught the ear of California businessman Peter Leggett, who offered the teen a summer residency performing at the Pasadena club the Western Connection.
Cummings recorded a fresh and better demo with Leggett’s help; it, too, arrived on Norman’s desk, and eventually the label boss phoned the young vocalist, who was summoned out of a high school math class to receive the phone call from Reprise’s Nashville headquarters. Still, Norman felt Cummings needed more time in the studio before releasing his first album, so he spent the next five years in Nashville polishing his talents as a singer and composer. His self-titled first LP was released in his home country of Canada in 1996, and it spawned the smash songs “Sure Enough” and “I Waited.” In early 1998, Chris Cummings was eventually freed in the United States.
Career
Cummings was signed by Warner Nashville in 1993 and stayed for the majority of the next eleven years. His self-titled debut album was certified Gold in 1998 and featured four top ten singles. Six more top ten singles followed, two from “Lonesomeville,” three from “Ohh…That Could Cost Him the Gold Bob,” and one from his 2004 greatest hits package.
Cummings wrote six songs for his 2008 album “Lonesomeville,” and another with longtime collaborator Rod Lewis. Cummings has long been a critically acclaimed songwriter, having written songs for Ricochet, Daryle Singletary, David Frizell, and Alabama’s Grammy-nominated recording “Twentieth Century.”
The first single, “Dixie Beauxderaunt”, was the first radio release by Cummings that was not self-penned. “Dixie” charted in the top 20 and ranked third on CMT. It was followed by “For The Music,” which peaked at number 15 on the charts. The current single, “In The Nicest Way,” is still charting. In the spring of 2008, another single from “Who Says You Can’t?” was released to radio.
