Gloria Reuben Early Life

Gloria Reuben was born in Toronto, Ontario, to engineers Cyril George Reuben and Pearl Avis Mills, a classical singer. Both of her parents were born in Jamaica. Her mother is primarily of African descent, while her father was mostly Jewish (with Ashkenazi and Sephardi roots), though he also had some African ancestry. When she was young, her father passed away. Finding Your Roots, the genealogy television programme hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., featured a segment on Reuben.

Reuben was one of six kids who grew up. Denis Simpson, her elder half-brother, was an actor and host of children’s television. He passed away in 2010. David, her little brother, passed away in 1988. In her 2019 memoir My Brothers’ Keeper, Reuben discusses her relationship with and experience with her brothers’ deaths. Reuben started practising the piano as a young boy and then pursued studies in ballet, jazz, music theory, and technique at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
