Greg Keelor Early Life, Family

Francis McIntyre Keelor was born on August 29, 1954, in Inverness, Nova Scotia. His biological parents had placed him for adoption, something he didn’t realize until he was an adult. Keelor was adopted when he was three years old and reared in Montréal.

Keelor attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute, where he met football teammate Jim Cuddy in 1971. In search of adventure, Keelor, Cuddy, and a group of college friends traveled to Western Canada on an old school bus after graduation. The bus broke down in Saskatchewan, and Keelor wound up in Lake Louise, where he worked for a while. He first considered a career as a musician while learning to play the guitar in Lake Louise.

Greg Keelor Career, Success, and Turning Point

Greg Keelor is a singer-guitarist who is half of the dynamic songwriting duo that has become something of a Canadian Lennon/McCartney over the course of the 1980s and 1990s. The gravel road beneath fellow Blue Rodeo frontman Jim Cuddy’s sunny clear tones and warm balladry is Keelor’s growl of a voice and ’60s rock sensibility.

Keelor met future songwriting partner Jim Cuddy in high school in Ontario, but they didn’t play music together until a few years later. The two were in a punk-pop band called the Hi-Fis before moving to New York in 1981 and forming a new band called Fly to France.

After that band disbanded, the two decided to record a demo of their songs, which included later-famous Blue Rodeo hits like “Try,” “Outskirts,” and “Rose Colored Glasses.” They returned to Toronto in 1984, where a country-flavored “lonesome highway” sound was developing in the clubs, and distributed the tape. Blue Rodeo was formed through friends and newspaper ads, and their debut album, Outskirts, was released in 1986.

Keelor began work on his debut solo album, Gone, in the fall of 1996. The album served as a sort of catharsis for Keelor, who had recently discovered he was adopted, been diagnosed with diabetes, and undergone a spiritual awakening after spending six weeks with a guru in India.
