K.D. Lang, also known as Kathryn Dawn Lang, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actress who rose to prominence in Canada and the United States by effortlessly singing songs from various genres such as country, folk, pop, and jazz. She has received numerous awards, including eight Junos, four Grammys, and numerous others.

Lang is of mixed ancestry, with Irish, English, Russian, German, Icelandic, Jewish, and Sioux ancestors. She advocates for human rights, animal rights, and gay rights. She adheres to the tantric teachings of traditional Tibetan Buddhism.

Early Life

On November 2, 1961, K. D. Lang was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. When she was nine months old, her family relocated to Consort. Her father, Adam Fredrick Lang, owned a drug store, and her mother, Audrey Lang, taught. She was the youngest of four siblings, with two older sisters and one older brother. She graduated from Consort High School and then attended ‘Red Deer College,’ where she decided to become a professional singer like Patsy Cline.

Career

K.D. Lang, full name Katherine Dawn Lang, is a Canadian singer-songwriter recognised for her androgynous “cowpunk” look as well as her pure, mournful mezzo-soprano voice and award-winning country-pop compositions.

Lang grew raised in the Canadian town of Consort. She was drawn to music at an early age and started playing locally as a teenager, ultimately adopting the stage name “K.D. Lang.” She participated in a theatrical musical based on the life of American country music icon Patsy Cline while attending Red Deer College. Lang acquired a strong admiration for the singer and, after graduation, helped organise the Reclines, a Cline tribute band, in 1983. Their first album, A Truly Western Experience (1984), drew notice and led to Lang signing with an American label.

Lang released Angel with a Lariat with the Reclines in 1987. That same year, she scored her first US success, “Crying,” a duet with country artist Roy Orbison; the song earned the Grammy Award for best country vocal collaboration. She reimagined old country and western songs for Shadowland (1988).

The CD, which contained songs like “I’m Down to My Last Cigarette,” was a success. Success continued with the edgier Absolute Torch and Twang (1989). Notable tracks included “Full Moon Full of Love,” and the album was nominated for a Grammy for best country female vocal performance. Lang released her debut album sans the Reclines, Ingénue, in 1992. It proved to be her breakthrough, owing in part to the massively hit “Constant Craving.” The record brought her to a larger audience and earned her the Grammy for best pop vocal performance.

Lang recorded the music for the film Even Cowgirls Get the Blues in 1993. All You Can Eat (1995) continued her exploration of pop music, whilst Drag (1997) was a more comedic endeavour with song covers relating to smoking. She returned to music with the uplifting Invincible Summer (2000).

In 2002, she worked with Tony Bennett on A Wonderful World, which won the Grammy for best traditional pop vocal album. Lang followed up with the solo albums Hymns of the 49th Parallel (2004), on which she interpreted songs by Canadian musicians, and Watershed (2008), a compilation of original work. The latter was her first album to chart in the Top Ten on Billboard.

Lang sang “Hallelujah” at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. She subsequently released Sing It Loud (2011) with the backing band Siss Boom Bang, a return to her country roots. She then worked on case/lang/veirs alongside Neko Case and Laura Veirs (2016). Makeover (2021) was a compilation of remixes recorded by Lang early in her career.

Lang sometimes acted in addition to singing. Her significant film credits include Salmonberries (1991) and Eye of the Beholder (1998). (1999). She has appeared as a guest on the television series Ellen and Portlandia in 1997 and 2014, respectively.

Lang was a well-known activist, particularly prominent in the LGBT rights movement; she officially came out as a lesbian in the early 1990s. Her other concerns included animal rights, and she made news in 1990 when she took part in PETA’s “Meat Stinks” campaign. It sparked a reaction, and numerous US radio stations banned her songs.
