Early Life:

Schumer was born on June 1, 1981, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side to Sandra Jane (née Jones) and Gordon David Schumer, who operated a baby furniture firm.

Schumer’s father was born in Ukraine to a Jewish family. She is the second cousin of United States Senator and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Her mother, who comes from a Protestant family with rich New England roots, converted to Judaism before marrying. Schumer was raised Jewish and claims she faced antisemitism as a youngster.

Her mother’s ancestors included Puritans from the English colony of Massachusetts in the 17th century. As a guest on Finding Your Roots in 2017, Schumer found that three children from her ancestor Thomas Tarbell’s family were seized and sent to Montreal in 1704 during a French-Abenaki invasion in Groton, Massachusetts.

The girl was ransomed by a French-Canadian family and eventually entered a French Catholic convent, while the two boys were adopted by Mohawk families in Kahnawake and were fully integrated. They married Mohawk women, and some of their ancestors rose to the position of chief. There are still Tarbell Mohawks in Kahnawake and Akwesasne, the brothers’ other village reserve on the St. Lawrence River.

Schumer’s family was rich throughout her childhood thanks to the success of her father’s furniture firm in Manhattan. Her father’s company collapsed and he went bankrupt when she was nine years old, and her father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis either then or when she was twelve. Her parents split some time afterwards.

Career:

Amy Schumer (born June 1, 1981 in New York, United States), is an American comedian and actress known for her caustic self-deprecating humour. Relationship concerns, body image, and the obstacles experienced by professional women in the twenty-first century were among the most often addressed subjects in her sometimes filthy humour.

Schumer was born on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, but her family relocated to Long Island, New York, when her father’s company failed due to multiple sclerosis. She handled difficulties with humour, and she developed her theatrical talents by receiving a theatre degree from Towson University in 2003. Before her breakout in 2007 on the NBC TV reality programme Last Comic Standing, she was a regular on the stand-up circuit. Despite finishing fourth, the exposure raised her popularity, and she headlined a Comedy Central Presents programme in 2010.

In 2011, Schumer released Cutting, her first stand-up album, and the following year she starred on Comedy Central in Amy Schumer: Mostly Sex Stuff. Following the popularity of her stand-up special, Comedy Central ordered Inside Amy Schumer, which debuted in 2013. The sitcom made Schumer a national figure, and it won a Peabody Award in 2014 for presenting Schumer’s “important style of culturally sensitive comedy.” Inside Amy Schumer earned her a prime-time Emmy Award in 2015.

Schumer made her film debut with Trainwreck (2015), a semi-autobiographical comedy written by Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow. Although the film was well-received by spectators and critics, its box-office success was overshadowed by a mass shooting at a Trainwreck screening in Louisiana; two people were murdered and nine were injured.

Following that, Schumer joined forces with her cousin, U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, to advocate for gun-control legislation. This endeavour has continued in the aftermath of the June 12, 2016 mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, which killed 49 lives. Schumer produced a sketch that highlighted victims of gun violence’s inability to seek legal redress against gun dealers or manufacturers.

Although Schumer often discussed her weight in amusingly self-deprecating tones, she sparked a controversy in April 2016 when she spoke out against Glamour magazine’s inclusion of her in an issue devoted to plus-size women. Schumer disputed being plus-size but claimed there should be no shame attached with that term, echoing comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s “not that there’s anything wrong with it!” disclaimer.

Many people questioned if such categories were genuinely beneficial in encouraging body positivity. On June 23, 2016, Schumer became the first female stand-up comedian to sell out New York City’s Madison Square Garden, which had a capacity of 18,200. The next day, she announced the start of a world tour that would take her to Europe, North America, and Australia.

In 2017, Schumer co-starred in the mother-daughter comedy Snatched alongside Goldie Hawn before taking a tragic part in Thank You for Your Service (2017), which examined an Iraq War veteran’s battles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In I Feel Pretty (2018), she returns to comedy, portraying an insecure lady who wakes up after a tumble with unshakable, if not delusory, self-confidence. Schumer appears in The Humans, an adaption of a play set around a Thanksgiving meal, in 2021. She went on to cocreate, write, and appear in Life & Beth (2022-), a semi-autobiographical sitcom about a woman taking stock of her life.

Schumer continued to perform her stand-up act during this period, and some of her performances were recorded for television. Amy Schumer: The Leather Special and Amy Schumer Growing, respectively, debuted on Netflix in 2017 and 2019. During the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, the comedian and her chef husband, Chris Fischer, appeared in the TV series Amy Schumer Learns to Cook. Expecting Amy, an open look at her pregnancy, aired on television that year; she gave birth to a son in 2019. Schumer will co-host the Academy Awards event in 2022.
