Amy Lysle Smart is an American actress who was born on March 26, 1976. Smart, a Los Angeles native, started her modelling career in Italy before enrolling in acting classes. Her first acting appearance was in the anthology horror film Campfire Tales by director Martin Kunert. This was followed by a small role in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997).

Smart appeared in Dee Snider’s Strangeland in 1998. She became well-known after making an appearance in the 1999 adolescent drama Varsity Blues and for her recurring part as Ruby on the television series Felicity (1999–2001). She then co-starred in Jerry Zucker’s ensemble comedy Rat Race and played the lead in the collegiate sex comedy Road Trip (2000). (2001). Early Life

Smart grew up in Topanga Canyon after being born in Los Angeles, California. Her father, John Boden Smart, was a salesman, and her mother, Judy Lysle (née Carrington), worked at a museum. She completed 10 years of ballet training before graduating from Palisades Charter High School. According to fellow model Ali Larter, Smart and Larter “became immediate friends” while posing in Milan, Italy. They studied acting together in Los Angeles.

Career

Smart’s first film role was in director Martin Kunert’s Campfire Tales after making an appearance in the music video for The Lemonheads’ “It’s About Time” in 1993. This was followed by a tiny part as Queenie in the 1996 version of John Updike’s short story “A&P.”

She played a copilot in a supporting role in Paul Verhoeven’s science fiction thriller Starship Troopers (1997) and a young woman from Ohio in the miniseries The 70s. In the 1999 movie Varsity Blues, Smart and Larter were once again together as the girlfriend of a well-known American football star. She made an appearance in the 1999 movie Outside Providence.

Smart portrayed Ruby, a recurring character on the Felicity television show, from 1999 to 2001. She costarred in the movies Starsky & Hutch (2004), Rat Race (2001), Road Trip (2000), and The Butterfly Effect (a science fiction drama) (2004). Smart played Jamie Moyer in a minor role in the American sitcom Scrubs in 2003.

In the romantic comedy Just Friends from 2005, Smart starred alongside Ryan Reynolds as the high school friend of an overweight young man who later visited her hometown and tried to confess his love for her. With over $50 million in global box office receipts, the movie was a success.

Jasmine Hollander, a recurring character on the Showtime comedy-drama Shameless, debuted on the show in March 2011. In season two, she kept appearing as a guest star. In Traverse City, Michigan, on September 20, 2011, Smart wed TV builder Carter Oosterhouse from the American cable network HGTV.

2014 saw Smart make an appearance in the Tyler Perry comedy The Single Moms Club and the suspenseful film Hangman (2015). She made a cameo appearance in the television movie Sister Cities in 2016. (2016). Additionally, she played Nina in two episodes of the 2016 IFC television show Maron.

After struggling for years to conceive, Smart gave birth to her daughter Flora through a surrogate on December 26, 2016. Smart made this public in 2017, writing: “After years of fertility struggles I give thanks today to our kind, loving surrogate for carrying her.” In the superhero drama television series Stargirl, produced by DC Universe and The CW, Smart was cast as Barbara Whitmore in 2019.
