Thompson was born on November 9, 1981, in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Her father Joseph Thompson was a musician and her mother was a homemaker. She grew up in Virginia, where she attended Collegiate School. At an early age, she learned ballet, jazz, and modern dance. She danced with the Richmond Ballet for many years.
After graduating from high school, she graduated with a degree in performance studies and literature at Harvard University. During that time, she danced with the Harvard Ballet Company and acted in many theater productions. In 2003, she worked as a publicity manager for the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. She also worked for Let’s Go Travel Guides. In 2005, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in performance studies and literature while she focused on French and postcolonial works.
